Hold a street race, lose a vehicle?

Squealing tires, black skid marks and traffic accidents all seem to follow in the wake of illegal street racing, so Santa Maria - along with other cities - is considering whether to take the keys out of the hands of these illicit drivers.

Santa Maria city Attorney Gil Trujillo has instructed his staff to begin looking into the feasibility of seizing cars used in street races, said Deputy City Attorney Phil Sinco.

Sinco is looking at similar ordinances that have been adopted by other cities, such as Riverside, before drafting a Santa Maria version.
